The Royal City of Anuradhapura was founded by a prince called Panduwasudeva who was later coronated as King Pandukabhaya 
in 377- 307 BC. as the first ruler to be born in the island.He was a nephew of Vijaya and chose his queen from among the
group of princess,who came to the island with Prince vijaya, descending from their royal blood. 

The name Anuradhapura is synonymous from the very begginning.The spot was according to legend,first settled by Anuradhapura,
a follower of Vijaya.Some generations later, a second Anuradha a Sinhala nobleman and relatives of the then reigning King 
was assigned the district around the village as his demesne.Finally it was founded as the capital of the island by the King 
Pandukabhaya.

A water supply assumed by the constitutions of tanks-lakes - and artificial reservoirs of which they called after themselves
exist to this day under the altered name of Basawakkulama.
