The Kandyan Kingdom functioned as the last bastion of national state during 1593-1815AD.The origin of the Kandyan Kimgdom is
closely linked to the ending of the administration of the Kurunegala Kingdom.
The city bounded on the three sides byriver Mahaweli and on the fourth by the Udawattekele forest cover,was named "City of Senkadagala"which
was derived from a hermit hamed Senkada.
The Kandyan Kingdom was subject to the administration of Sitawaka Kings for a brief period.It became independent territory from
1593-1815AD.
The King Wimaladharmasuriya I founded the second dynasty of years with their nine kings.Konappu Bandara, made his seat of
administration as King Wimaladharmasuriya I in Kandy.He consolidated his position by contracting a marriage with Kusumasana Devi
who was christened as Princess Dona Kathirina in 1592AD. King Senerath succeeded King Wimaladharmasuriya I and married the widow queen
Dona Kathirina.The death occurred of King Senerath and the Kingdom was divided into three regions.
The last King of Sinhala-Royal dynasty was King Weera Parakrama Narendrasinghe was a carefree and joyful administrator who spent most of his time at Kundasale , how is better known as "Sellan rajjuruwo"(Sporty King).
King Sriwickrama Rajasinghe who was the last King of Kandy and whole of Sri Lanka. He too, was Nayakkar by descent. It is well recognized that owing to his hostile attitude towards the Prime Minister and other aristocrats and cruel punishment imposed to the noblemen, King had anatagonized, most of the population.This created an 'inviting' atmosphere for British who then invaded the country. The Kingdom was invaded by the British army and King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe and his Queens escaped to a remote area called Meda Mahanuwara located a few kilometres away from Kandy. However The King and his Queens were arrested there, brought to Colombo Fort and deported to Vellore in South India by the ship called "Convolis" and the King of the United Kingdom was recognized as the King of Ceylon.
